HCA – Orthopaedics

This role is responsible for delivering high-quality supportive care within the field of Orthopaedics. As an essential contributor to clinical excellence at Glasgow, the HCA ensures safe, effective, and compassionate patient support while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment. The position requires strong communication skills, the ability to work under the direction of registered clinicians, and a commitment to evidence-based, patient-centred practice.

Duties typically include assisting patients with personal care, mobility, and rehabilitation exercises; supporting nutrition and hydration; taking and recording basic clinical observations; helping prepare patients for procedures; maintaining a clean and safe ward environment; and accurately documenting care activities. The HCA also contributes to service improvement and quality initiatives that enhance patient experience and overall care delivery.

The HCA must demonstrate professionalism, empathy, resilience, and adaptability, ensuring that communication with patients, families, and colleagues is conducted to the highest standard. While fulfilling day-to-day responsibilities, there is an expectation to support the wider clinical team, contribute to a positive ward culture, and engage in continuous learning to maintain competence in the role.

Although the position does not involve independent clinical decision-making, it requires strong organisational skills, the ability to prioritise delegated tasks effectively, and the confidence to escalate concerns promptly. Individuals are expected to uphold safeguarding policies, infection-control standards, and all relevant clinical governance frameworks while promoting a culture of safety, dignity, and respect.

Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, and a patient-centred approach underpin this role, ensuring that the care delivered aligns with organisational values and contributes positively to the broader healthcare mission at Glasgow. The role demands ongoing professional development, adaptability, and a commitment to consistently high-quality patient support.
