HCA – Urology

The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) in Urology plays a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care within the Urology department in Glasgow. Working as an essential member of the multidisciplinary team, the HCA contributes to safe, effective, and compassionate care by assisting registered clinicians and ensuring patients receive support tailored to their individual needs.

Core responsibilities typically include assisting with personal care, supporting mobility, preparing patients for procedures, monitoring comfort and wellbeing, obtaining basic observations, maintaining accurate records of care provided, and contributing to a clean and safe clinical environment. The HCA may also assist with specimen handling, chaperoning, patient reassurance, and supporting Urology-specific procedures under appropriate supervision.

The role requires professionalism, empathy, reliability, and strong communication skills to ensure effective interaction with patients, families, and colleagues. HCAs must be able to follow instructions, work collaboratively, and adapt to changing clinical priorities while maintaining patient dignity, privacy, and safety at all times.

While the HCA does not undertake autonomous clinical reasoning or diagnosis, the role demands attentiveness, initiative, and the ability to escalate concerns promptly to registered staff. Participation in training, meetings, and quality-improvement activities is encouraged to enhance patient experience and maintain high standards of care within the service.

HCAs are expected to uphold all clinical governance frameworks, infection-control standards, and safeguarding responsibilities. Teamwork, a patient-centred approach, and a commitment to continuous learning underpin this role, contributing positively to the wider healthcare mission at Glasgow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver safe, effective, high‑quality clinical services.
  • Conduct assessments and develop patient‑centred treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to clinical guidelines.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support service development and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in training, teaching, and supervision where appropriate.
  • Uphold safeguarding, governance, and regulatory standards.

Key Requirements:

  • Relevant professional qualification and registration.
  • Experience in the specialty of practice.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage workloads.
  • Commitment to evidence‑based and patient‑centred care.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
  • Professionalism, reliability, and problem‑solving skills.
