HCA – Colorectal
The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) in Colorectal services plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care at Glasgow. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and clinicians, the HCA assists with the care of patients undergoing treatment for colorectal conditions, including pre- and post-operative surgical care.
Key responsibilities include assisting patients with personal care, supporting mobility and comfort, helping with nutrition and hydration, taking and recording observations, and providing reassurance and emotional support. HCAs also contribute to preparing patients for surgical or diagnostic procedures, supporting post-operative recovery routines, maintaining cleanliness and safety within clinical areas, and accurately documenting delegated care tasks.
The role requires empathy, good communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. HCAs must follow instructions carefully, use equipment safely, recognise and escalate concerns promptly, and respond flexibly to changing patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
Individuals are expected to uphold all safeguarding, infection-control, and clinical governance standards, ensuring dignity, privacy, and patient safety at all times.
