Consultant – Psychiatry (Adult)

The Consultant in Adult Psychiatry plays a leading role in delivering high-quality specialist mental health services to adults with complex psychiatric needs. As a key contributor to clinical excellence at North London, the Consultant ensures safe, effective, and compassionate care while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.

This senior position requires advanced clinical reasoning, the ability to work autonomously, and a strong commitment to evidence-based practice. Core duties include comprehensive psychiatric assessment, formulation and diagnosis, development and implementation of treatment plans, monitoring clinical outcomes, maintaining accurate medical records, and contributing to governance, audit, and service-improvement initiatives.

The role involves active participation in multidisciplinary meetings, training sessions, consultant reviews, and quality-enhancement projects aimed at improving patient experience and strengthening service delivery. Professionalism, empathy, resilience, and adaptability are essential, particularly when supporting individuals experiencing acute episodes, chronic mental illness, or crisis situations.

Beyond day-to-day clinical responsibilities, the Consultant is expected to provide leadership across the service, supervise and support junior medical staff and multidisciplinary colleagues, contribute to teaching and training, and engage in continuous professional development to maintain high standards of practice. The ability to manage complex caseloads, prioritise effectively, and remain calm and decisive in high-pressure environments is fundamental.

The Consultant must adhere to all clinical governance frameworks, safeguarding policies, and regulatory requirements while promoting a culture of safety, dignity, and respect. Strategic thinking, problem-solving, and strong leadership further enhance the Consultant’s contribution to overall service effectiveness.

A compassionate, patient-centred approach and excellent interpersonal skills underpin this role, ensuring alignment with organisational values and supporting the wider mental health mission across North London. The position demands ongoing professional development, adaptability, collaborative teamwork, and a sustained commitment to delivering consistently high-quality adult psychiatric care.
